Tavannes Watch Co. — 135 Years of Watchmaking History

Founded in 1891 in the village of Tavannes, in the heart of the Swiss Jura Mountains, Tavannes Watch Co. was born from the vision of watchmaker Henri-Frédéric Sandoz, driven by the ambition to combine technical excellence with modern industrial production.

The Beginnings: A Watchmaking Industrial Revolution (1891–1914)

From its earliest years, the manufacture adopted innovative methods inspired by American industry, integrating machine tools and mass production.

In partnership with the Schwob family, experts in international distribution, Tavannes quickly expanded its watches into global markets.

In just a few years, the company established itself as a major player in the Swiss watchmaking industry, with industrialized production that never compromised on quality.

Rapid Growth and Pioneering Innovations (1910–1930)

At the beginning of the 20th century, Tavannes became one of the world’s leading watch manufacturers.

A pioneer in the development of wristwatches and new calibers, the brand consistently introduced numerous technical and functional innovations.

In 1917, it designed one of the first waterproof wristwatches, intended for British submariners—a major breakthrough in the history of watchmaking.

In the 1920s and 1930s, Tavannes produced millions of watches and developed daring creations, such as the « driver » watch and the watch integrated into a belt buckle, illustrating its innovative spirit.

A Global Manufacturer (1930–1960)

At its peak, Tavannes was among the world’s largest watch manufacturers, employing thousands of people and producing several thousand pieces daily.

Its movements also equipped prestigious brands, a testament to the quality and reliability of its mechanisms.

The brand also played a significant role during wartime, supplying robust watches adapted to extreme conditions.

Crises, Transformation, and Heritage (1960–2000)

Like the rest of Swiss industry, Tavannes faced the economic upheavals of the mid-20th century and the quartz crisis.

In 1966, the brand was integrated into large watchmaking groups, marking the end of its historic independent operation.

Despite this turning point, the Tavannes name remains associated with a legacy of quality, innovation, and expertise.

Rebirth and Continuity (since the 2000s)

At the beginning of the 21st century, the brand was reborn with the aim of reconnecting with its core values: precision, innovation, and Swiss tradition.

It now embraces a contemporary dynamic while preserving a watchmaking heritage spanning more than a century.
